John Wayne “Buddy” Fortner, age 76 of Beckley, passed away at his home on Monday July 23, 2012.

Born on April 3, 1936 in Marion, Va., he was the son of the late John Washington Fortner and Catherine Louise Snider Fortner.

Mr. Fortner was a retired building construction worker, and was involved in the ministry of the Pine Lodge Chapel at the Sunbridge Pinelodge Nursing Home. He enjoyed singing, reading his Bible, and gardening. He was a US Marine Corp. Veteran.

Mr. Fortner was preceded in death by a sister, Dixie Cochran; two brothers Willie and Roy Fortner.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include three sisters, Janie McDowell of Beckley, Emma Louise DaFoe of Washington, Illinois, and Catherine Wood of Eccles. Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews are also among his survivors.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of John Wayne Fortner on Friday July 27, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Randy Smithson and Pastor Steven Stover officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Friday.

Pallbearers will be Brian Rahall, William Stover, Harless Stover, Matthew Stover, Daniel Harper, and Samuel Harper.
